Mental Health Resources

The well-being and safety of our children at St Joseph's is always our priority. Staff are available for immediate issues your family may be facing at this time, and can provide direct support over the phone or email.

To help maintain your child's and family's emotional well-being at this time, we will continually update this page with resources, activities and letters of support for you to use together, as a family.

We have also compiled a page updated with resources to help you explain to your child what is happening in the world at the moment. These age-appropriate resources will give you the tools to help your child understand the current climate, without fear or overwhelming them. Returning to School

As your child returns to school in September, you may find that they experience increased levels of anxiety which may manifest in different ways. You may also experience seperation anxiety following spending continuous time with your child. This is normal, and help is available if the anxiety feels overwhelming. 

South West Yorkshire Partnership have provided the following three resources for yourself and your child about how to cope with and prepare for the return to full time school. These helpful resources should make the return to school a more manageable experience for all.

Anxiety in Children

Your child may be exhibiting behaviours that are unusual for them, some of which may be a sign of anxiety. 

Talking to Children about their Worries:

  1. If your child /young person is showing signs of anxiety encourage then to open up and talk about it or communicate in whatever means is most comfortable for them.
  2. Listen to their words and let them know you have heard them and take their concerns seriously. You might calmly reflect back to them the essence of what they have said to you, eg “you feel frightened”.
  3. Provide children with facts. You can tell them that this is a new virus and the Government, scientists and doctors are doing everything they can to help. Be honest.
  4. It may be helpful to help children identify the things they can control and things they cannot control (see image below).
  5. Be a calm role model

Mindfulness

Below are a number of resources for mindfulness that are appropriate for primary school aged children. These can be used at home and in class.

 

New Horizon - Meditation and Sleep Stories is a YouTube channel with lots of different guided meditation videos for children for use in different scenarios.

Parenting During Coronavirus

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has developed a series of posters to help parents on a range of topics including support around providing structure, ‘bad’ behaviour, managing stress and managing anger.  The complete set can be found on the WHO website at:

Helplines and Resources

There are helplines and websites available to help with the complex range of issues that can arise during periods of stress and uncertainty. These can help both adults and children. 

WF-I-Can: Wakefield council resource for young people, offering help regarding well-being, relationships, healthy eating and more. It also offers a crisis service.
