Geography

 

 Intent

We aim for all children at St Joseph's to be the very best geographers. The children will learn about human and physical geography by exploring, appreciating and understanding the world in which we live and how it has evolved.

We intend to do this by:

  • Ensuring a high quality geography curriculum that is both challenging and enjoyable
  • Providing a variety of opportunities to learn about human and physical geography from a local, continental and global viewpoint
  • Ensuring children are confident geographers who are able to apply the key skills learned to a range of challenging activities
  • Revisiting these areas of learning regularly children will remember more, know more and understand more
  • Acknowledging the impact of human activity on the future of our planet and considering how they can contribute to improving the environment

 

Implementation

Long, medium and short planning is progressive and cohesive across the year groups and provides opportunities to revisit. Teachers provide quality first teaching in line with the teaching standards.

  • Children will be assessed through the use of concise summative assessment, quick flashback quizzes, prior learning and assessment through questioning and class discussion
  • Teachers will 'understand where their children need to be' through a secure understanding of the end of Key Stage expectations, progression of skills and sticky knowledge and/or pre key stage expectations and inclusive, on-going, formative assessment
  • Teachers will use a range of strategies to promote independence, mastery and high expectations for all
  • Teachers will plan meaningful and engaging lessons for children to learn knowledge, develop skills and retain these throughout school

 

Impact

The children will have the ability to make links between human and physical geography and how the two impact upon each other

The children will develop geographical knowledge, skills and vocabulary to help them explore, navigate, and understand the world around them

Children will understand the effects of climate change and be aware of these effects upon their surroundings, their own responsibilities, and how they can contribute towards improving the environment, however small that contribution may be

Children will acquire knowledge of a range of different cultures and traditions, and learn tolerance and understanding of other people and environments

Children will understand localities, and how and where people fit into their overall structure.
