Year 1 is the first of two years children spend in Key Stage 1 at St. Joseph's.
Children work within a topic based 'creative curriculum' where they learn through a range of directed and child initiated activities. Children in Year 1 have a smooth transition from Foundation Stage and staff work closely to ensure all pupils are happy in their school life and make good progress in their learning.
Our Religious Education is at the heart of all we do in Year 1. We follow the scheme called 'The Way, the Truth and the Life' in which children learn about and explore the Catholic Faith, their own faith and the faith of others.
Children partake in daily English and Maths lessons and a range of topic based and PE lessons - just take a look at our timetable and you will see how busy life is in Year One!

PE is on Mondays. Children will need to bring both their indoor and outdoor PE kit. In addition to this, children will take part in a 'Daily Mile' and will need trainers in school every day for this activity.
Homework is sent out on Fridays and is due in the following Wednesday. Spellings will be given out on Fridays and tested the following Wednesday.
It is expected that children read for 5-10 minutes daily and that a comment should be made in the child's reading record to confirm and communicate this to staff in school. Children need to bring their reading book into school each day.
